
The name sapphire is derived from the Latin word sapphirus and the Greek word Sappheiros. According to the legend aquamarine originated in the treasure chest of mermaids and since then has been associated with the ocean. In the olden times, aquamarine was worn as amulets by Greek sailors to please the sea God. The classic blue sapphire is a precious stone. Sapphire has never lost its timeless appeal. The gemstone sapphire comes in a hue of colors, however its pleasing blue color, makes Sapphire the gemstone of the heaven. The other colors of sapphire are pink, yellow, green, purple, orange and other. The chemical composition of sapphire is similar to that of ruby, thus it is not red sapphire, and it is ruby.
